NEWSLETTER FOR MAY, 2008April was a very enjoyable and fun month for everyone in Franklin County and for all of those who traveled long distances to attend the Dogwood Festival, High on the Hog, and Carnival in Winchester. The weather was beautiful and everything went great for another successful year for these activities. This year is moving along at a rapid pace and everyone is enjoying the springtime. We would like to remind you to be careful and drive safely during your travels and always make sure everyone in your vehicle buckles up. A lot of boating and water activities are also being enjoyed so make sure you wear your life jackets and remember Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs is a deadly choice, in an automobile or boat, so please don’t do it. During the month of May, the Franklin County Sheriff Department, Special Operations Narcotic K-9 Unit, will be visiting churches and other organizations throughout Franklin County, as requested, to conduct drug awareness and K-9 Presentations. This is an excellent program, especially for the Youth Groups. If your church or other organization would like to have the Unit visit with you, please contact the Cowan Police Department at 962-0110, or Chief Deputy Brent Perry at the Franklin County Sheriff Department at 962-0123, to schedule your Police K-9 and Drug Awareness Event. During the month of April, the Cowan Police Department arrested (4) individuals on criminal charges. The crime rate continues to decline due to the citizens working together with the Police Officers providing valuable information when seeing suspicious activity. We encourage all citizens of Cowan who have a question concerning a particular State Law or City Ordinance to call us. The following question was recently called in; QUESTION: Is it against the law for someone who is 16 years old to get a tattoo? ANSWER: TCA 39-15-403 Tattooing of Minors states: (a) Tattoo means to intentionally mark or color by pricking or inserting pigment or coloring matter into the skin so as to leave an indelible mark or figure. (b) A person who for commercial purposes tattoos the skin of any person under eighteen (18) years of age commits a Class A misdemeanor. As always it is a pleasure for us to answer your questions. If you need any additional information concerning this law or any other law please consult your family Attorney. The Cowan Police Department will be conducting its Seized Vehicle Auction on June 21, 2008, at 9 am in front of the Police Department. Vehicles to be auctioned off can be viewed on the Cowan Police website at www.cowanpolice.com and click on seized vehicle auction. If you have any additional questions concerning the auction please call the Cowan Police Department from 8am – 4 pm Monday thru Friday, at 962-0110. Anyone with information concerning illegal drug activity or other criminal activity being committed, or is about to be committed, please give us a call at 962-0110, Crime Stoppers, or call the Franklin County Sheriff Department Tip Line at 967-8811, your name can remain anonymous. Remember, when you report illegal drug activity, you are helping us to keep the drugs away from our children. “Working Together For A Safer Community” Sincerely, Chief Robert Reynolds |
